Welcome Back!!!

So, this is 2009 and for most of us it is our last (calender) year here at Mercyhurst. Unfortunately, the weather does not make it too easy to enjoy the time here right now.

- The ice storm hit today and I tried my best to salt the walkway a little bit. I hope you all stayed safe and didn't fall or crash your car.

- The RAs of this area are planning an area program, which will happen on Jan 27th at 8.30pm at Lewis 3953. It will be an hour full of free delicious food!!! We'll have great dips and even a chocolate fountain. All you have to do is show up and eat as much as you can!!!

- If you have any cool ideas for a program for just our row of townhouses, please let me know!!! I am open for anything.

- If you are in need of a shovel or salt, please stop by at 738 (my place). I just need the stuff back!!!!

- That would be all for this week! Everything that happens on campus is in the Tuesday Afternoon. They're showing the Dark Knight on Friday guys! Don't miss that! It's an awesome movie and it's free!!!!

Winter Term Week One

Welcome back everyone! I hope you had a nice break. It's hard to believe that the time of relaxing and eating is already over and the Winter term is here. I am already buried in work, I even have a quiz this week, and I want the next break to come really fast!

First things first, I will come around this week and have you sign another Who's Who sheet, which tells Res Life when you leave for break and when you will come back. You don't have to leave tho, so you can just put "staying" on it.

Something that is not yet thoroughly planned, but it will happen for sure: The South Lewis Townhouses and the 41st STreet townhouses will have a Christmas decoration contest with many prices to win! We will have more prices than last year (for those who have already lived in a townhouse) and maybe we will even have the local TV station WJET TV stop by! So get in the Christmas spirit and start decorating your townhouse! More info coming soon!

Campus Events and Notifications:

The mysterious man who is trusted around the world with so many secrets is coming to Mercyhurst! Dec. 16th at 8:15pm, join Mercyhurst Student Government in the Distinguished Lecture Series as Frank Warren speaks about PostSecret, the riveting community art project that has swept the nation. For more of the inside scoop, go to www.postsecret.blogspot.com!

Santina Sgro, MSG Secretary, will be coordinating Christmas Break transportation for students who need to get to the Erie airport, train or bus station. Requests must be emailed to msg@mercyhurst.edu and must include the following information:
The date and exact time (indicate AM or PM) that your flight/train/bus departs Erie, PA (Between Friday, December 19, 2008 through Sunday, December 21, 2008). This is not the time you want to be there – you need to indicate the exact time of the flight/train/bus departure.

·The date and exact time (indicate AM or PM) that your flight/train/bus returns Erie, PA (Between Friday, January 2, 2009 through Monday, January 5, 2009)

·Your preferred phone number on the days you are travelling (preferably cell phone number)

·Your preferred email address to receive a confirmation of whether or not transportation can be provided

IMPORTANT NOTES:

· The deadline for getting this information in is THURSDAY, DECEMBER 11th at 11:59pm.

· On campus pick-up location is Baldwin Hall (no exceptions) and a Mercyhurst College van will be providing the transportation.

· This is not a guaranteed or an on-call service. The MSG Secretary will collect all requests and determine the schedule for each day based on the largest number of students who need transportation. For example, if you are the only student leaving at 2:00am and everyone else is leaving between the hours of 8am – 5pm, there is a chance that you will not be able to get transportation. In either case, you will receive an email indicating whether or not you can get transportation on the scheduled days. Students can expect to receive this confirmation via email by Monday, December 15, 2008 which gives ample time to make alternate arrangements if necessary.

CARD SWIPE FOR Thursday, Friday and Saturday Nights on the EMTA Bus

All students are reminded that they must have their Mercyhurst ID and must have it swiped before being allowed to ride the bus. Get to the One Card office to get one or you will be required to pay cash to ride!

GOT YOUR PASSPORT?

What is the Multicultural Awareness Passport Program? Mercyhurst College encourages, recognizes and values the participation of students at multicultural programs/ events on campus. It is our hope that through the Multicultural Awareness Passport Program, there will be an increased level of multicultural competence and sensitivity among student participants.

How does the passport work? Every freshman received a Multicultural Awareness Passport in the New Student Orientation Guide. Upperclassman can get one from their RA, AD or from the Multicultural Center (located in the Student Union.) The Program recognizes your attendance and participation at various multicultural programs on campus. For each multicultural program/event that you attend, present your Multicultural Awareness Passport to be validated with a stamp as proof of attendance. Once you have attended a minimum of six (6) events, you may present your passport to the Director of the Multicultural Center for entry into a grand prize drawing during Cultural Awareness Week which is Monday, April 27, 2009 through Friday, May 1, 2009. So, you have plenty of time to get involved and get your passport stamped!

How do I find out about multicultural programs that are on campus? Programs and events will be advertised around campus and you can check with the Multicultural Center to get more information. There will be a variety of films, lectures, music, theatre, dance, art, and other special activities throughout the year. If you have any questions about this or other programs, please contact Pertrina Marrero at pmarrero@mercyhurst.edu.

IT & DocuCenter NEWS & INFORMATION

IKON DocuCenter
Monthly and quarterly review meetings will be used to evaluate usage & capacity and to determine how we can improve pricing going forward. If you have any suggestions or complaints, please share them with Donna Malzewski (dmalzewski@mercyhurst.edu) on X2211 or with Pat Benekos on X3337 (pbenekos2@mercyhurst.edu). Our commitment is to match or beat pricing from any external printshop so please bring custom jobs to Donna for a quote. Our goal is to save the Mercyhurst community money as we deliver a high quality product.

LakerNet plans
As the amount of snow piles higher and higher outside our windows, we are taking advantage of the opportunity to address LakerNet issues. We are restructuring our network perimeter and upgrading several of our server systems to provide for a more manageable, reliable, and secure web environment. We are also in the process of organizing a Web Committee meeting for mid-December. This committee will serve as a guide throughout the LakerNet improvement process. IT personnel are also working to identify and research potential web portal solutions. If you are interested in participating in the portal development process, please contact Matt Engel on X2087 or at mengel@mercyhurst.edu.

Microsoft 2007!!!
Mercyhurst students can purchase Microsoft Office Standard edition from Journey Education for $59.98. The bundle includes Word 2007, Excel 2007, PowerPoint 2007, and Outlook 2007. Access 2007 is NOT included in the standard version. To get Access, you must purchase the Professional version for $79.98. For more information, please go to http://www.msstudentselect.com/aicup/ and select Mercyhurst from the list of schools.

Change your password before it expires (every 180 days or sooner)

Avoid the hassle of not being able to login to your email or WebAdvisor accounts by preemptively changing your password on your own schedule. First, determine the schedule that you’ll remember. For example, (1) May before leaving for the summer, (2) when you return to campus in the fall and (3) early January after the holidays. This way you control the schedule and can better remember when to make the change. Set up an account in the Password Management Tool on the Lakernet homepage before you forget your password. It’s too late to set up the account if you can’t remember your password; you have to know your password to set up your PMT account.

Christmas Break Energy Savings
We have the opportunity to save significantly on energy consumption during the week between Christmas and New Year’s! Be sure to power off all equipment including computers, printers, copiers, scanners, & faxes whenever you leave your room or apartment but especially over lengthy absences such as Christmas break. You can feel good about making a difference in campus energy consumption as one of your New Year’s resolutions. It benefits everyone.

CCUE Student Technology Forum
The Consortium for Computing in Undergraduate Education will hold its Student Technology Forum at Edinboro University on Friday, March 20, 2009. More details will be available after January 1, but we encourage students to participate in this event. 25 regional institutions are members of CCUE and may send student teams to the forum. Last year students from Mercyhurst participated at Seton Hill and some won cash prizes for their efforts. This is a good opportunity for students to present to audiences beyond Mercyhurst and gain valuable experience. Student presentations may focus on any application of technology in their academic courses. Details will be available at http://www.ccue.org in January.

As an alternative method for submitting jobs in the future, you may consider submitting your requests using the IKON TRAC Solution, a web-based job submission tool that IKON uses to manage jobs going through the IKON DocuCenter.

Using TRAC is a great way to submit your job requests directly from your office, and monitor the status from your desk. You can attach a file or bring a hard copy down after submitting the job. TRAC enables you to search your job history, view your account, or re-submit a job at anytime.

Health and Safety Inspections

Hello residents!

Health and Safety Inspections are coming up on October 20 to 24. They will be conducted by members of Residence Life (an HD and a member of the maintenance staff) between 9am and 4pm. You do not need to be present in your residence at the time of inspections. Please refer to your Mercyhurst handbook to check for the items that are permitted in student housing and those that are not permitted. It is really important that you check the handbook, because sometimes an item might seem safe, but it might not be permitted in our townhouses/apartments. You could receive a fine and/or community service if one of these items is found in your residence. If you have any questions, either comment on this blog, talk to your RA (Nadine - 738 or x3663), or call the Residence Life office (http://lakernet.mercyhurst.edu/departments/res_life/index.asp).

Please do not use swear words or other profane language.
Other than that, just have fun reading and writing the first blog of a Mercyhurst residence area!!!
